Remembering Frederick John Bierkamp '42
PUBLISHED IN THE SEPTEMBER 1945 ISSUE OF THE SCROLL (page 73):
"Ens. Frederick John Bierkamp, Michigan '42, was killed June 6, 1944, when the LCT on which he was serving as skipper, one of two officers, struck a mine off Utah Beach and sank. Brother Bierkamp died in the same tragedy which cost the life of Brother Wright [Auburn '11], 13 crew members, and 64 Army personnel who were being transported to the beachhead on the first day of the invasion of the continent.
The young Phi enlisted in the Navy in September, 1941, and was commissioned in December, 1942, after training at Notre Dame and Tower Hall. He was sent overseas in July, 1943, after some amphibious training, as the skipper of LCT 458. He landed in England and trained there until the invasion of Normandy.
Brother Bierkamp is survived by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. F.J. Bierkamp of Youngstown, Ohio."
