Team Will Play Sigma Alpha Epsilon In Mudbowl Championship
[Posted October 22, 2024] The Michigan Alpha Alumni Association congratulates the Phi Delta Theta (PDT) Mudbowl Team which won the 2024 Mudbowl Tournament with dominating victories over Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) and Phi Kappa Psi (Phi Psi). PDT will have a high noon showdown on Saturday, October 26 against Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) in the 2024 Mudbowl Championship.
PDT narrowly lost a hard-fought 2023 Mudbowl Championship against SAE in a match that was not decided until the last play, so revenge will be a motivation in what is expected to be an epic football battle.
This year's game will be the 63rd time PDT has played SAE. PDT is believed to have a winning record in these games against the "house across the street." PDT last won the Mudbowl Championship in 2017.
Thanks to the generous donations of Michigan Alpha alums adding to the amount of donations raised by the actives, PDT won the fundraising competition and received the top seed in the 2024 Mudbowl Tournament. Having the best position greatly helped to make PDT's path to victory much easier.

To date, PDT has raised $8,710 for the Charles Woodson Fund at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital which is only second to SAE's total raised of $5,267. The total amount raised for C.S. Mott Children's Hospital by all participating fraternities in the Mudbowl Tournament so far is more than $45,117.

Last year, the Mudbowl raised a total of more than $63,100 for C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. The combined donations from the Mudbowl amount to one of the single largest annual contributions for this outstanding pediatric acute care hospital that is rated best in Michigan and among the top in the nation. This is also the single largest verified annual philanthropic fundraising effort by University of Michigan Greek Life.
The Mudbowl Championship will be held in the Mudbowl on the Michigan vs. Michigan State football gameday. Kickoff is at noon.

Mud Bowl
- A PHOTO HISTORY OF THE MUD BOWL 1934 to 1997 ~ MICHIGAN'S GREATEST FRATERNITY ATHLETIC RIVALRY During the fall of 1934, Phi Delta Theta (PDT) active member E. Reed Low '37 challenged the "house across the street" (Sigma Alpha Epsilon -- SAE) to a friendly game of "touch" football on the morning of Homecoming in a little used valley in their side yard along South University. Low is considered the founder of the Mud Bowl. The men of PDT and SAE fought a close match which SAE narrowly won 8 - 6. Given the intense rivalry between the two fraternities which were located only a couple hundred feet apart, it was decided that the Mud Bowl would be an annual event. The Mud Bowl became a revered Homecoming tradition as PDT and SAE fiercely battled each year for nothing more than pride. In the early years, the game essentially was a rough intramural football match played on a field that was wetter and shorter than regulation. As the annual contest matured, it was decided that the challenge and entertainment value of the game could be enhanced by tilling the ground and flooding the field. Eventually, the Ann Arbor Fire Department contributed to making the mayhem on the field even more muddy by pouring approximately 10,000 gallons of water into the valley shortly before the game. By kickoff of games played in the 1970s through the 1990s, it was not uncommon for the mud to be more than one foot deep with water covering the west end of the "field." The PDT-SAE rivalry series in the Mud Bowled ended in 1997 after the 60th game between the two fraternities was played. The records about these 60 games are a combination of fact and myth, but no one disputes that this was the greatest fraternity athletic rivalry in the State of Michigan if not the entire nation. The Mud Bowl grew into such a spectacle that crowds numbering in the thousands showed up each year to witness the game. The game attracted coverage by Sports Illustrated, ESPN, ABC Sports as well as campus, Ann Arbor and Detroit media. The Mud Bowl became so popular that national brewing companies -- at first Stroh's, and then Miller -- sponsored the event. Of course, some people have speculated that the presence of sororities playing football, or speedball in some years, during the half-time may have garnered most of the great public interest in the event. Nonetheless the athleticism and intensity of the PDT-SAE matchups proved to be very entertaining for the fans. While the exact win-loss tally is subject to dispute, it is believed that PDT rightly boasts a few more victories in the series than SAE. Given that SAE hand picked the referees for each Mud Bowl, a PDT victory typically required overcoming the opposing players plus the men in stripes. For this reason, PDT's hard fought "losses" remain as much a source of pride as its many victories. Brother Steve Biegun '86 Inaugurates Michigan Alpha Alumni Guest Speaker Program
Michigan Alpha Alumni Association Seeks to Involve Alums in Helping Actives' Professional Development & Career Networking
[Posted February 7, 2022] In late January of this year, Brother Steve Biegun '86 became the first participant in the new Michigan Alpha Alumni Guest Speaker Program which took place over the internet broadcast platform Zoom that was set up to allow for an interactive discussion event with active chapter members attending in the living room of the chapter house.
More than twenty-five active chapter members watched Brother Biegun discuss his impressive career journey to the top of the international relations field during the evening talk. Earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Russian language and Political Science at the University of Michigan (U of M) as a member of the Class of 1986, he explained how this solid academic foundation enabled a steady professional career rise during the past three decades. Brother Biegun also talked about the value of brotherhood, friendships and life lessons learned through the fraternity.
His senior governmental positions in international relations include U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Staff Director, White House National Security Council Staff Director and U.S. State Department Deputy Secretary of State. Brother Biegun also held high-level private sector positions including Ford Motor Company Vice President of International Government Affairs. He is currently performing corporate consulting, and lives in Virginia with wife and children.
Active chapter Alumni Secretary Tom Berry '24 said, "On behalf of the active chapter, I thank Brother Biegun for making the time and effort to share his outstanding professional experiences and career building insights with the actives. We think the Alumni Guest Speaker Program is a great way for alums to help actives to learn about career paths and practical professional knowledge. We look forward to connecting with more alums in the future through these talks and special events such as Homecoming."
The Michigan Alpha Alumni Association is working with the active chapter leadership on scheduling at least two or three guest alumni speaker events per semester. Given the unpredictability of pandemic protocols and challenges of travel, we anticipate alumni talks will likely be only conducted by Zoom this semester, but it is hoped that participating alums will eventually have the option to speak to actives remotely or in-person at the chapter house.
In addition, the Alumni Association plans to explore more ideas to promote professional development and career networking to benefit active chapter members in the future. We are particularly interested in the concept of helping to facilitate summer internships and first jobs for active chapter members. Of course, given the tight job market for new hires, it is possible that alums may also benefit from having connections to potentially employ bright, highly-motivated U of M students.
Active chapter President Matt Wood '24 said, "One of Phi Delta Theta's Cardinal Principles is sound learning. Michigan Alpha believes that the fraternity helps our active chapter members add to their educational experience on campus by teaching valuable leadership skills and professional development not provided in the classroom. Our alums can play an important role in helping the fraternity to achieve this goal."

Re: Alumni Association's parking and chapter house access policies
Dear Michigan Alpha Alumnus Brother:
Welcome back to Ann Arbor and campus! The Michigan Alpha Alumni Association welcomes you to park your vehicle on the chapter house's front lawn during the University of Michigan football game on Saturday subject to five conditions.
First, do not park on the driveway (front or rear) or block the paths to and from the driveway.
Second, strictly comply with Phi Delta Theta (PDT) General Headquarters' risk management policy that prohibits the use and, or, possession of alcohol and other government-controlled substances on PDT-owned property.
Third, you will be held responsible for paying the cost of repairing any damage to the lawn and, or, property caused by your vehicle.
Fourth, the Alumni Association, Michigan Alpha House Corporation and Phi Delta Theta (General Headquarters and active chapter) are not responsible, and shall be held harmless, for any damage to your vehicle and, or, injury to persons that may occur on the property. Parking on the property is 100% at your own risk, and we have no ability to provide security for vehicles and, or, people.
Fifth, the City of Ann Arbor's ordinance requires that a vehicle parked on a residential lawn during a U of M football game must be moved to an approved parking area immediately following the end of the contest. An unmoved vehicle could be issued a parking fine by the City, and be removed from the property at your expense.
Due to COVID-19 protocols and lease/insurance requirements, presently, we ask that you do not enter the chapter house. The Alumni Association is planning to host an open house for Homecoming on September 25, and we will allow alums access to the inside of the chapter house on that date for a limited time period. More information about plans for Homecoming 2021 will be announced in coming weeks on the Alumni Association's web site (www.pdtumich.com) and social media pages.

[October 4, 2019] As the Alumni Association previously announced, the Michigan Alpha chapter house has been leased to students for the 2019-2020 school year because Michigan Alpha's active chapter was suspended following the 2018 Winter Semester. Thus, unfortunately, there will not be any Homecoming festivities at 1437 Washtenaw this year. However, alums are welcome to park on the front lawn of the chapter house (please do not park in the back or front driveways).
While the Alumni Association is very disappointed to be unable to host a Homecoming event at the chapter house as we did each year from the refounding of the active chapter in 2004 through 2017, we are pleased to inform alums that Tom "TK" Kelly '82 and Sean Vasquez, University of the Pacific '96, have once again graciously opened up their legendary tailgate in the Blue Lot to Michigan Alpha alums and their guests who wish to enjoy the finest BBQ being served anywhere in Ann Arbor on Saturday. In addition, the tailgate will feature a full open bar.
The BBQ will be professionally cooked by the award winning Kevlar BBQ. In addition, there will be side dishes including baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw plus desserts.
Attendees who eat and drink at the tailgate are encouraged to make a minimum donation of $30 per person at the donation box to cover the costs of the event. People who just stop by to say a quick hello should not feel obligated to make a donation.
The tailgate is not hard to find if you look for the only PDT flag (likely the only fraternity flag) flying proudly in the Blue Lot on the northeast side of the stadium (about 450 feet north of Stadium Tunnel along the grass edge of the Stadium grounds). While it's not the same as gathering at our beloved 1437 Washtenaw, we guarantee there is not another fraternity alumni Homecoming event on campus that will match this one in terms of quality of food, beverages and camaraderie!
One other note about 2019 Homecoming. The SAE Alumni Association (AKA "Michigan Mudbowl Club") has decided not to host the Mud Bowl on Homecoming this year for a variety of reasons. The 2019 Mud Bowl will be hosted on the morning of the Michigan vs. Notre Dame game on October 26.

This year's event at the chapter house was intended to be low-key compared to the 150th anniversary Homecoming last year. BBQ Revives Tradition Attracting Strong Alumni Attendance
[Posted November 1, 2012] For Michigan Alpha alums, few places on the University of Michigan campus bring back more good memories on Homecoming than 1437 Washtenaw.
Back in the day, no Homecoming visit by an alum was truly complete without walking up the steps of the portico entrance and swinging open the massive solid wood doors to be greeted by active and alumni brothers in the foyer. That's exactly what more than 35 alums -- from classes of the 1950s through the 2000s -- and their guests experienced during Homecoming 2012.

Four Decades of Alums Visit Chapter House, USMC Veteran Honored
[Posted October 31, 2011] The Alumni Association hosted the Homecoming Open House to provide alums and their guests with an opportunity to visit the chapter house, meet fellow alums, enjoy breakfast refreshments and share good memories. Alums representing graduating classes from the 1960s through the 2010s attended.
During a brief program that started at 10 a.m., active chapter president Will Hardenbergh '12 and Alumni Association President JT (Tom) Buck '77 welcomed alums and gave them an overview of Michigan Alpha's outstanding progress during the past year as well as plans to keep the momentum rolling.
Alumni Association Secretary Greg Karmazin '87 initiated a new tradition for Homecoming by reading the names and Bond Numbers of alums who moved on to the Chapter Grand during the past year. A moment of silence was held to honor these loyal alums.
Another highlight of the program was Karmazin introducing attendees to Jim Izen '89 who was visiting the
chapter house for the first time since 1990. After graduating from the Reserve Officers' Training Corps
(ROTC), Izen entered the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) where he had a distinguished 20 year career.
His USMC service included the combat mission of leading the first A1M1 tank platoon into Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm. Everyone gave Izen a hearty round of applause to thank him for his service to our nation.
Other alumni attendees included Dr. Ted Ludwig '61, Pat Hayden '66, Jon McLain '77, Joe Fattore '80, Nat Love '81 (PDT Province President), Andrew Brandner '93 and James Alsobrooks '10.
The Alumni Association was pleased with the event, but hopes to see more alums attend the 2012 Homecoming Open House on October 13 when the Wolverines battle the Fighting Illini. We are considering ideas to expand the Open House to attract more alumni participation. Mark your calendars!

Alumni Encouraged to Attend Brief Program at 10 a.m.
[Posted September 28, 2011] If you're in town for Homecoming 2011 when the Wolverines take on the Purdue Boilermakers in the Big House at noon on October 29, please be sure to stop by our Homecoming Open House in the morning.
The chapter house will be open for viewing, and complimentary breakfast food, coffee and juice will be served starting at 10 a.m. (the house may be open starting at 9 a.m.). There will also be a short program starting at 10 a.m. to welcome alums and make announcements.
As always during football Saturdays, free parking on the front lawn is available for PDT alums. Please understand that the house is locked at all times, so unless you visit in the morning, someone may not be around to let you in.

Actives and Alums Celebrate Fraternity's Establishment
[Posted March 25, 2011] More than 50 actives and 10 alums attended the annual Founders Day Dinner held on March 19 at the Michigan League. The event started with a reception at the chapter house and progressed to the Michigan League for a sit down dinner that featured remarks by the presidents of the
active chapter and Alumni Association.
The graduating seniors served as the guest speakers by sharing their wisdom about the fraternity. The Alumni Association announced its decision to name Martin Newcomer III '38 the "Alumnus of the Year." The event ended with the traditional Founders ceremony that reenacts the story of the establishment of the fraternity.
The 2012 Founders Day Dinner is expected to be held in late March. Alums are encouraged to attend.

Michigan Alpha Military Heroes Posthumously Honored
[Posted October 20, 2010] In keeping with Michigan Alpha tradition, the 2010 Homecoming Open House on October 16 at 1437 Washtenaw brought together recent and old alums to enjoy camaraderie and share good memories over a continental breakfast.
With a pure blue sky and bright sun, the crisp morning air felt refreshing. The leaves on the mighty oak trees in the yard showed fall colors. The chapterhouse was clean while the present and past glories of the chapter were on display in the Trophy Room. The active brothers were on hand to welcome alums.
Many alums have had this enjoyable experience countless times; however, attendees of Homecoming 2010 were treated to program that was truly special. The highlight of the Alumni Association and the active chapter’s program was to honor our fallen heroes U.S. Navy Cmdr. Phil Craig ’63 and U.S. Navy Lt. Scott “Harv” Waldinger ’86.
Formal remarks were made about both men’s involvement with the chapter when they were active members as well as their fine military service to our nation that unfortunately ended when they made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
Alumni Association President JT (Tom) Buck ’77 said, “During their years as actives members in the fraternity, Brother Craig and Brother Waldinger were popular with the brothers of their eras and held leadership positions in the house. After graduating, they went on to distinguished, although sadly too brief, careers defending our nation.“
“They exemplify the best values of Phi Delta Theta,” said Buck. “We will never forget them, and honor their memories in the chapter house to inspire future generations of Phis.”
Framed pictures of both men were then presented for permanent display on the prestigious walls of the chapter house’s Trophy Room.
A number of alums who were active members with either Brother Craig or Brother Waldinger attended the program including Terry Miller ’60, Dr. Harry Huffaker ’61, Dr. Ted Ludwig ’61, Dave Hood ’63, Rich Worsham ’67, Tony Hagelgans ’87, Greg Karmazin ’87, Dan Dretler ’88, Pete Karmanos ’88 and Chris Shepard ’88.
The Alumni Association is planning to host the 2011 Homecoming Open House before the Purdue game on October 29.

[March 8, 2010] The Michigan Alpha chapter hosted the 2010 Founders Day Dinner at the Michigan League on U of M's campus. The dinner followed a brief "meet and greet" at the chapter house. A total of more than 65 Phis attended this year's events. The highlight of the evening was terrific speech by sports commentator and author John U. Bacon.

Michigan Beats Indiana 36 to 33 in Close Game
[Posted December 15, 2009] Every Homecoming is a special time when alums visit the chapter house to remember past glories and renew friendship, but the 2009 event was particularly memorable.
As usual, prior to the mid-afternoon kickoff, alums parked for free on the lawn and enjoyed meeting their fellow alumni and active brothers at Michigan Alpha's Homecoming Open House. The actives had the chapter house in top shape and put out breakfast foods with coffee to welcome returning alums as well as their guests.
In addition, this year's gathering featured the dedication of a major house renovation and the presentation of a community award.
Thanks to a very generous group of 1950s era alumni headed by John Buck ‘54, the Alumni Association was able to rebuild the North Porch during the summer and officially dedicate it as reopened on Homecoming morning.
John stepped up and gained the support of Dick Young ‘51, Doug Roby ‘56, Bob Leland ‘58 and Bernie Rinella ‘58. The five alums donated a total of $12,750 to for the project. On behalf of his fellow donors, John cut the ribbon on the door to dedicate the North Porch during a short ceremony attended by alums and active chapter members.
The other highlight of the morning was the Ann Arbor Campus Community Coalition presenting Michigan Alpha with the "Unsung Heroes" award. The commendation recognized Michigan Alpha's leadership in the U of M Greek System for maintaining an alcohol-free chapter house.

The Alumni Association is considering ideas for expanding homecoming festivities next year. Homecoming 2010 will be held on October 16 when the Wolverines take on the Iowa Hawkeyes.

New and Old Alums Reminisce, Reconnect and
See Progress Made by Active Chapter
[Posted November 29, 2008] A strong contingent of alums visited Michigan Alpha's Homecoming Open House at 1437 Washtenaw. It was a classic crisp, sunny fall Saturday in Ann Arbor. The only tradition missing was a Wolverine win as the team fell to the Fighting Illini by a disappointing score of 45 to 20.
Prior to the mid-afternoon kickoff, alums parked for free on the lawn and enjoyed meeting their fellow alumni and active brothers. The actives had the house in top shape and put out breakfast foods with coffee to welcome returning alums as well as their guests.
